A message from us, to you.

Next week you are taking your SATS. Everyone here knows how hard you have worked, but there is something very important you must know:

SATS do not assess all of what makes each of you special and unique. The people who create these tests and score them do not know each of you the way we do, and certainly not the way your families do.

They do not know that some of you speak two languages, or that you love to sing or draw. They have not seen your natural talent for dancing. They do not know that your friends count on you to be there for them, that your laughter can brighten the darkest day, or that your face turns red when you feel shy. They do not know that you participate in sports, wonder about the future, or sometimes you help with your little brother or sister after school. They do not know that you are kind, trustworthy, and thoughtful…every day you try to be your very best.

The scores you get from these tests will tell you something but they will not tell you everything. There are many ways of being smart. You are smart! You are amazing! You are the reason every member of our school team comes to work! So remember that there is no way to ‘test’ all of the fantastic and fabulous things that make you, YOU!

We believe in you!

Have a relaxing weekend.

From everyone at Nonsuch x

Welcome back. We hope you all had an enjoyable Easter Break!

Today, Wednesday 13th April,  Y6 have been given the SATs Review Practice Booklet.  This will be their homework for the next few weeks, however, we would encourage your child to continue with their daily reading.

At the front of the booklet you will find the Home Practice Agreement page to be signed.   The expectation is that this booklet will go home each night and returned to class each day.

The booklet is intended to give each student the chance to practise the concepts reviewed in class that day.  Having this time to go over ideas in a different setting a few hours later is a great way to help commit them to memory.  It is important to have this little bit of extra review time each day, but jumping ahead will not be helpful in this context so please only complete the questions assigned for that day.

Thank you and thank you for your continued support.

Spelling:   Please continue to use the A+ Spelling app to help with your daily practice.

Mathletics: Keep your fluency up by practising often!

Reading: Remember to read for at least 10 minutes per day and discuss your book with your parents or guardians.

Next week is French week and we will be organising the French Breakfast that takes place on Friday.

What's happenin' this term?

We continue to investigate light in science.

Our Topic this term is French history and culture.

In computing we are now starting our market research and are creating questionnaires to continue with the creation of our very own mobile apps!

There are lots of sporting events coming up so keep an eye out for letters. We also continue with Real PE & Tennis.  Please make sure you have appropriate PE Kit in school for indoors and outdoors at all times as PE sessions are subject to change.

HOMEWORK

As a school, we're focusing on homework that allows students to apply their learning in new contexts in addition to important spelling and maths practice. Students will share home learning in class on Wednesdays, so they are welcome to make notes throughout the week in the contact book to aid their discussions.

Each week, students in Y6 will be tasked with five home learning activities. These include:

Weekly spellings

    • we learn groups of spellings which follow rules which can be applied to other words and used in writing
    • you may find the free A+ Spelling Test app to be a fun way to practise

Mathletics

    • these activities mirror the maths topics taught during the current unit

Daily reading and discussion

    • please use the Bloom's Taxonomy document to help deepen your child's understanding of a text through higher order questioning

Spelling, punctuation and grammar

    • encourage your child to identify SPaG elements in their reading book with particular focus on the weekly SPaG topic

Maths

    • ask your child to share their maths learning from the week by teaching you the methods they use in calculations and problem solving
